International Cultural Centres: Explore the world on your doorstep

With so many foreign missions in the capital there’s no shortage of choice when it comes to hoovering up the art and culture of other countries.  Here’s seven international culture centres that you should check out.

Alliance De Française

The Indo-French Cultural Centre specialises in French language teaching, and organizing and curating cultural events in the leafy surrounding of Lodi Gardens. Formally established 1956, Alliance Française de Delhi celebrated its 60th birthday on the 30th June.  Here’s the website where you can find out more about  Alliance De Française

The American Centre

The US embassy’s cultural centre offers Dilliwalahs exhibits, book launches, discussions, lectures, seminars and a cultural program.  It also houses the American Library, a hub for information on the United States, its people and its policies.  Find out more at the website.

The British Council

The United Kingdom’s international organisation for educational opportunities and cultural relations, the British Council supports projects in the arts, education, English language and society. There’s also English language training and learning opportunities for both students and teachers.

Goethe-Institut, Max Muller Bhavan

The Federal Republic of Germany’s cultural institute promotes the study of German abroad and has been encouraging cultural exchange in India for over 60 years.  The Goethe-Institut cultural societies, reading rooms and exam and language learning centres, offer a unique insight into Germany.

Istituto Italiano di Cultura, the Italian Cultural Centre

Istituto Italiano di Cultura, the Italian Cultural Centre, is famed for Diva, the cafe at the ICC, but there more to the centre than its amazing eatery (you’ll need to be a member to eat here, so look at the web link to find out more about membership).

Instituto Cervantes, the Spanish Cultural Centre

You’ll find Instituto Cervantes, the Spanish Cultural Centre, slap bang in the centre of Delhi, near Connaught Place.  Founded in 1991, its mission is to promote Spanish language teaching as well as fostering knowledge of the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries throughout the world.

Japan Foundation

The Japan Foundation has been promoting cultural and arts exchange, Japanese Language Education; Japanese Studies and Intellectual Exchange, since January 1994.  The Japan Foundation Facebook page gives a rundown of events and activities at the centre.
